An exceptional 16th-century Renaissance devotional engraving, produced in Rome after a design by Giulio Clovio, engraved by Cornelis Cort, and published by Antonio Lafreri, one of the most important print publishers of the Renaissance period.

This monumental Crucifixion scene belongs to the intellectual and spiritual culture of Counter-Reformation Rome, combining elite artistic design with a deeply contemplative theological message.

Christ is shown on the Cross beneath a dramatic sky, flanked by the Virgin Mary, St John, Mary Magdalene, and Roman soldiers. At the foot of the Cross rests a memento mori skull, a symbolic reminder of mortality and redemption. The composition is solemn, powerful, and designed for meditation rather than decoration alone.

Beneath the image appears a finely engraved Latin epigram addressing the viewer directly:

Cur, age, ferre crucem cunctaris, homuncio, pro me;

Quandoquidem pro te iam Deus ipse tuli?

Translation:

“Why then do you hesitate to carry the cross for me, little man,

when God Himself has already carried it for you?”

The plate bears the inscription “Don Iulio Clovio de Crovatia inventor”, confirming Giulio Clovio as the designer, along with the publisher’s imprint “Romae Ant. Lafrery”, firmly placing the work in Rome during the mid-16th century. The engraving is recognised in scholarship as the work of Cornelis Cort, Clovio’s principal engraver during this period.
