The Ralph & James Clews chestnut basket from around 1820 is a remarkable piece of blue and white transferware earthenware pottery.

The Clews brothers operated in Cobridge, Stoke-on-Trent, England, from 1815 to 1834, specializing in intricate blue-printed wares. Their designs often catered to both domestic and export markets, with patterns like "Romantic Ruins" also known as Donkey & Ruins showcasing picturesque landscapes and architectural scenes.

The chestnut basket, a functional yet decorative item, reflects the Georgian era's aesthetic sensibilities. The Clews brothers were known for their innovative techniques and artistic flair, which made their pottery highly sought after, especially in the American market. Unfortunately, their business faced financial difficulties, leading to bankruptcy in 1834.
