The manufacturer was established in Hunslet, just south of Leeds, England, by John Green and Joshua Green (who were not related). The company became renowned for its creamware, often called Leedsware, which was lighter than competitors' products and gained popularity in European markets.

In 1775, Richard Humble joined the firm, and later, in 1783, William Hartley became a partner, leading to the name Hartley Greens & Co. The pottery was known for its intricate designs, including openwork and basketwork styles, as well as its black basalt stoneware. By 1790, the company employed over 150 people and had an annual sales turnover of about £30,000.

The company faced challenges during the Napoleonic Wars, which disrupted trade, and eventually ceased operations in 1881. However, it was revived multiple times, including in 1888 and later in 1983 by Leeds City Council. Today, its legacy lives on through reproductions of its iconic designs
