The Conta & Boehme porcelain inkwell featuring card players is a fine example of 19th-century German bisque porcelain artistry. Though often described as "18th century," most of these figural inkwells were actually produced around circa 1880 by the renowned Conta & Boehme factory in Germany.
This particular piece typically depicts a group of finely dressed figures—often nobility—gathered around a table playing cards. The entire scene would liftoff to reveal a tray beneath, which holds the inkwell and a sander (used for blotting ink). These were not just functional desk items but also decorative statements, blending utility with storytelling charm. This set does not include the underneath inkwell. It is for the figural group top cover which displays very well as an ornament on its own.
It measures 6 & 1/4" or 16cm height, and 8 & 1/2" or 21.5cm in length.
The condition is inspected and found losses to cards in three characters hands, a loss of wine glass, and repair to other glass. Both chair backs have had historic restoration.
