Bio:
The Carl Thieme Porcelain Manufactory, established in 1872 in Potschappel, Dresden, Germany, has a rich history rooted in the tradition of Dresden porcelain. Carl Johann Gottlob Thieme, the founder, initially started as a porcelain painter and antique dealer before venturing into manufacturing. The factory became renowned for its intricate hand-painted designs, particularly floral motifs, and its Rococo Revival style, which was highly popular in the 19th century.
The "Europa and the Bull" figurine group reflects the manufactory's dedication to artistry and storytelling, drawing inspiration from classical mythology. Over time, the manufactory gained international recognition, winning awards like the gold medal at the 1900 Paris World's Fair. After Carl Thieme's death in 1888, his son-in-law, Karl August Kuntzsch, continued the legacy, further enhancing the reputation of Dresden porcelain with opulent designs and flower decorations.
The manufactory faced challenges during the 20th century, including nationalization after World War II, but its pieces remain highly collectible and celebrated for their historical and artistic significance.
