An original French early 18th-century mythological copperplate engraving from the Enlightenment period depicting Venus Marina, published circa 1719 and associated with the celebrated antiquarian scholar Bernard de Montfaucon.
The composition presents Venus in a rich marine procession, surrounded by classical figures, sea creatures and symbolic attributes. The plate is arranged in two narrative registers, a format characteristic of scholarly antiquarian publications of the period, intended to illustrate and compare classical imagery drawn from ancient sources.
Montfaucon’s engravings were produced to document and interpret classical antiquity and played a foundational role in the development of archaeology and art history. Original plates from these works are increasingly scarce and highly regarded by collectors.
A striking and intellectually engaging piece, equally suited to a refined interior or a serious collection of early prints.
