Antique hand stitched needlework sampler from the 18thc Georgian era dated 1792.
Hand stitched on linen and richly worked with alphabets, numerals, crowns, borders and bird motifs.
Signed by MARY MWDIE 16 Years old. She would have been born in c1776. While the maker remains otherwise undocumented, the inclusion of name date and age places this antique sampler within Georgian educational tradition, offering an intimate rare connection to a young womans life in the late 18thc.
Condition: Inspection found the piece in good condition with no notable damage. There are signs of age which are shown clearly in images and video. The frame has had some knocks historically but is intact and conserves the item very well. Images show these details and are to be examined pre purchase.
Samplers of this period were educational works, typically produced by young girls to demonstrate proficiency in literacy, numeracy and needlework.
The colour palette is soft brick red, olive green, and ochre on a natural linen ground reflecting the dyes and materials used in the 1700s. A beautiful example of museum quality early textile domestic Georgian folk art.
Measures 57cm or 22 & 1/2" height. 24cm or 9 & 1/2" width
