Important Early Antique Royal Doulton Jug
c1871
by Frank Butler Master Potter
with assistant Mary Aitken

A vase made at The Glasgow International Exhibition. Frank A. Butler was a renowned artist who worked with Doulton pottery for nearly 40 years, from 1872 to 19111. Despite being profoundly deaf and nearly mute, Butler’s creative genius shone through in his work, which was admired by notable figures such as Queen Victoria and William Gladstone1. Butler’s designs often featured geometric shapes, floral patterns, and even animal motifs. He was known for moulding wet clay into unusual shapes by applying pressure from the inside of the vessel. His work is characterized by its bold and intricate details, making each piece unique and highly collectible.

Condition:  Inspection found condition is very good overall. It is found that there is a fine circular hairline crack on the interior of the top rim which is very thin and stable.
