The Story Behind the tea bowl
On January 3, 1752, the Geldermalsen struck a reef and sank while laden with a vast cargo of silk, gold, and over 150,000 pieces of porcelain destined for Holland. It remained lost until 1985, when the acclaimed diver Michael Hatcher recovered the treasure. The subsequent 1986 Christie's Amsterdam auction made maritime history, coining the term "Nanking Cargo".
The teabowl represents a moment frozen in time, a survivor of an 18th-century disaster. This piece brings a unique narrative and historical gravitas which will delight future custodians.
