John Ridgway Coffee Cup & Saucer c1850 Antique Porcelain #5/3142 Blue

Antique cup and saucer by Ridgway in foliage shape with blue enamel colour and 22kt gold gilt embellishment. The body has raised acanthus leaf molded form. Patten is marked underside 5/3142.

Made in 1850-55    

Condition; Inspection found the set has no chips cracks crazing or restoration. There is some gilt wear in areas shown in the images otherwise good condition for the age .

Bio; John Ridgway & Co was a prominent porcelain and earthenware manufacturer /based in Shelton, Stoke-on-Trent, England. The company was established in the early 19th century by John Ridgway, a member of the renowned Ridgway family of potters. Initially, John and his brother William operated the Cauldon Place Works together, but they split in 1830, with John continuing at Cauldon Place and William taking over the Bell Works.

John Ridgway gained recognition for producing high-quality porcelain and became the "Royal Potter" to Queen Victoria after the 1851 Crystal Palace Exhibition. His works often featured intricate designs and patterns, catering to the middle and upper markets. The company also exported wares to America, including pieces with American-themed designs.

Over time, the Ridgway family expanded their pottery businesses, and the company underwent several partnerships and name changes. By the mid-20th century, Ridgway Pottery merged with other companies, forming Ridgway Potters Ltd
