Sunderland lustre jugs featuring "The Sailor's Tear"
Characterist
Period: c1820
- Appearance: Made of creamware and feature transfer-printed images and hand painted lustre and vivid pink metallic colours.
- Imagery: Images include the sailing ships, compasses.
-
Poem Variants: The poem found on the jug is the fourth verse of Lord Byron's poem "The Tear" (sometimes titled "Man Doom'd to Sail" or simply "The Sailor's Tear"). A transcription reads:
"He leaped into the boat as it lay upon the strand but o! His heart was far away with friends upon the land he thought of those he lov'd the best. A wife and infant dear and feeling filled the sailor's breast The sailors eye a tear."
These jugs are considered valuable examples of English folk art and maritime heritage, reflecting the importance of seafaring communities in North East England during the 19th century. - Condition; Inspection found that piece has crazing all over to the glaze. There is a hairline to the spout, rim and base. There is an original fissure from firing to the base. No restoration found. Otherwise no further chips cracks or findings. See video for personal inspection pre purchase and inspect all images with care on a computer sized screen as acceptance of condition as clearly presented.
