About the Artwork
Adélie Penguins captures Shackleton’s fascination with Antarctic wildlife, a theme he explored extensively during his voyages aboard the Lindblad Explorer in the 1970s. The lithograph was produced around 1977 by Mill Pond Press and is known for its crisp detail and atmospheric depiction of the icy habitat.
🎨 What Is a First Artist’s Proof?
An artist’s proof (A/P) is a small number of prints (often 10–15% of the edition) set aside from the main run. A first artist’s proof is even more exclusive—typically the very first pulled from the press, often used by the artist to check quality. These are highly prized by collectors for their rarity and direct connection to the artist’s hand.
💰 Value & Rarity
While a standard signed edition (e.g. #545/950) has been listed for around $72 USD, a first artist’s proof—especially signed—is worth significantly more, with good condition, provenance, and market demand. Shackleton’s original oils have sold for thousands, and his limited edition prints often range from £100 to £600 or more.
📜 Provenance & Collectibility
Shackleton’s works were exhibited at prestigious venues like the Royal Society of Marine Artists and sold through galleries.
