The 19th-century antique terracotta bust of Sir Walter Scott by Watcombe Torquay is a known piece of Victorian pottery. These busts were produced by the Watcombe Pottery Company, which was active in Torquay, Devon, from around the 1870.
Manufacturer: Watcombe Pottery Co., Torquay, Devon, England.
- Material: Terracotta. The company was well known for its high-quality terracotta and also produced Parian ware.
- Subject: Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832), the renowned Scottish novelist, poet, and historian. The bust design is a19th-century model, possibly after the marble sculpture by Sir Francis Chantrey (1781-1841).
- Period: Produced in the 19th century, likely from the 1870s onwards, during the peak of Watcombe Pottery's operations.
- Description: The bust depicts Scott with his head turned slightly, wearing a shawl or wrap. It is mounted on a moulded circular socle (pedestal base). This measures approximately 23.5cm in height or 9 & 1/4".
- Condition: Inspection found the piece has some wear to the surface in some areas due to the delicate composition of terracotta. There is some glaze loss to the nose area and above one eyebrow.
Background;
Watcombe Pottery devoted much of its time and attention to terracotta works, becoming a notable producer of art pottery and decorative items, including various portrait busts and figurines. The terracotta used was derived from local Devon clay, known for its rich, reddish-brown color.
