A rare set of 14 engravings in hand tinted colour of The Stations of the Cross a series produced by Petrak after Furich. They were salvaged from a church and conserved well in a folio protected from light before we acquired these at a general auction. 

  • Artist/Designer: Josef von Führich (1800-1876), a prominent member of the Nazarene movement, created the original paintings that Petrak used as his basis.
  • Engraver: Alois Petrak (born 1811 in Königseck, Bohemia) etched the series.
  • Technique: The works are etchings, with watercolour hand tint. .
  • Number of Stations: The series consists of the traditional 14 Stations of the Cross.
  • Significance: These engravings were instrumental in circulating the Nazarene style of religious art to a popular audience across Europe and beyond, influencing religious art for generations.
  • The images depict the traditional fourteen Stations of the Cross, illustrating the final journey of Jesus Christ from his condemnation to his burial.

          Station 1: Jesus is condemned to death by Pontius Pilate.

          Station 2: Jesus is made to carry his cross.

  • Station 3: Jesus falls for the first time under the weight of the cross.
  • Station 4: Jesus meets his sorrowful Mother, Mary.
  • Station 5: Simon of Cyrene is compelled to help Jesus carry the cross.
  • Station 6: Veronica wipes the face of Jesus with a cloth, leaving an image of his face imprinted on it.
  • Station 7: Jesus falls a second time.
  • Station 8: Jesus meets the weeping women of Jerusalem and speaks to them.
  • Station 9: Jesus falls a third time.
  • Station 10: Jesus is stripped of his garments.
  • Station 11: Jesus is nailed to the cross.
  • Station 12: Jesus dies on the cross.
  • Station 13: Jesus' body is taken down from the cross and placed in the arms of his mother, Mary.
  • Station 14: Jesus is laid in the tomb

Condition~ Inspection found the set overall in very good condition. Some minor wear to the edges where previously framed. some small foxing spots to the rear but not visible at the front. 

Measurements~ 11" or 258cm maximum height, and 8 & 1/2" or 21.5cm width.
