Pearlware is a type of ceramic developed in the late 18th century, primarily by Josiah Wedgwood in 1779. It is a refined earthenware with a whitish body and a bluish-tinted glaze, achieved by adding small amounts of cobalt to the glaze mixture.
Pearlware was created as a cheaper alternative to porcelain, offering a delicate appearance while remaining affordable. It became popular for tableware and decorative pieces throughout the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Many Staffordshire potters produced pearlware, often decorated with blue-painted designs or transfer prints.
